Lifesling for Sailboats

Lifesling for Sailboats

Instructor: Margaret Pommert

The Lifesling was developed here in the Pacific Northwest and is an essential piece of safety equipment. But not enough sailors know how to use it effectively to rescue someone (especially those of a much larger size) and bring them back on board. This class starts with a ‘chalk talk’ and video showing how to rig and use the Lifesling on various sailboats, with both full and shorthanded crew. Then into the lab for a hands-on session with the various retrieval gear – everyone hauling someone up into a mock-boat. Can YOU get your partner into the boat?

Captain Margaret Pommert serves as V.P. for Safety at Sea for The Sailing Foundation, which developed the Lifesling. In addition to teaching Lifesling instructors, Margaret teaches Crew Overboard courses at The Seattle Boat show and US Sailing Offshore Safety at Sea courses. Margaret chairs the US Sailing Hanson Rescue Medal Committee, a national award which recognizes significant accomplishments in seamanship which have saved a life.
